The
sumptuous Durazzo Centurione sixteenth-century villa,
built by order of Marquis Gio Luca Durazzo, is situated in a
panoramic position on the San Giacomo di Corte hill. It is
surrounded by a splendid terrace with balustrade, decorated
with 17th and 18th century statues, and is encircled by a park
rich in tropical plants and rare conifers.
The
interior of the villa extends over four floors and is
considered the prestigious, representative residence
of the town. Visitors can see the ground floor rooms,
including the beautiful Green Room, the dining room of
the Durazzo marquises and the apartments on the main
floor, enhanced by period furniture and a small but
significant collection of paintings by Ligurian
artists of the Genoese 1600s, among whom Domenico
Piola, Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari and Luciano Borzone
stand out. Also to be noted are the spectacular Stucco
Room and the Belvedere Room, containing the family
chapel.
The
park is divided into the following: a romantic park; an
Italian garden, with many examples of cycas revoluta; an
English-style wood and a small citrus plantation, all enhanced
by valuable mosaic paths, statues, marble busts and fountains.
Due to the richness and importance of its flora and tree
species, the park has been twinned with the Villa Hanbury
Botanical Gardens, Ventimiglia.
