Castello
Medieval Castle of Santa Margherita Ligure:
The Castle faces the sea and is situated at the foot of the mound from which Villa Durazzo dominates. It was built in 1550 by decree of the Doge of Genoa to safeguard the town from the numerous barbarian raids by the very famous Berber pirate, Dragut, known as “Barbarossa”. The construction is of modest dimensions, with a rectangular plan, rounded corners and with a tower positioned at the south-west corner.
The entrance is situated in the area of the tower on the north side, from where there is direct access to the room in the main part of the building, characterized by a large masonry central column and by vaulted ceilings.
The roof-terrace above, formerly linked by an iron spiral staircase located in the north-east corner of the room, has been made accessible from the stairs situated in the tower.
Having recently been restored, the building is now a venue for cultural and artistic events.
